Winter Reflections

The thing I love about the windows at Susan Hensel Gallery is how they interact with the neighborhood in the daytime. Here, an excellent shot from my pal Julia. The effects adjust with the light. A never ending parade.

Art Happenings in the frozen Twin Cities: I hope you get a chance to check out the upcoming exhibit Framing the Field at St. Catherine University, a selection of images from the collection of the Minnesota Museum of American Art. Curated by George Slade, it lists an impressive array of talent. Here is info on the opening reception on February 9th – and lecture on March 14th.

Post 366: Dreamy Reflections

Shadow Greenery #1, January 31, 2013

Backlit Shadow Greenery #1, January 31, 2013

A challenge taken, and met. A journey made. This past 366 days have been instructive, challenging and inspiring. I met my goal of integrating art practice into my every day. I learned how some times, it is great to go ahead and work fast…see what happens. And that sometimes, I prefer more time. Photography and photographic art can seem like it should be instantly accomplished, but like all art, it demands its process, thought, rework and play. More soon.

Show Info: Debora Miller’s installation I’m Not Me, She’s Over There, and its companion outdoor piece Horizon Grid (viewable 24/7), is up until February 22nd at Susan Hensel Gallery. Open Mondays 10-5, and by generous appointments.

I Am Human

Ok, so I started my ‘count up’ one day early. I got mixed up between the number of posts marked in my dashboard and the number of days left until I met my goal. So, I am not putting a counter on today’s post. The 366th day in a row will be on January 31st.

From me today, dedicated to my 1 day old nephew Cody (a true work of art, that one): 20130129-205737.jpgPaperwhites, January 29, 2013

Post 362: Getting Better All The Time

At the end of the day I always feel that I’m short of what I wanted to achieve. The paintings are a struggle to try to get to work. To some extent they often fall short of my aspirations. That’s what keeps you going. You start on the next one because you always feel that you might get closer to this goal of the ideal painting. Sometimes you see it. Or you see other art that inspires you and you come back to the studio and think, ‘Oh, my work is so dull,’ so you try and improve.
– Glenn Brown, interviewed in Art in America, April, 2009.

Post 358: Getting to Lyrical

Spent Lily #3, January 22, 2013

Spent Lily #3, January 22, 2013

Working in series, like with these lilies, allows me to move closer to what I am wanting. This image was taken yesterday with the batch in that good cold light. I loved the form, and thought about it all day. Making it black and white with some filter adjustments lets me enhance its swinging form. The detail in the focussed area gives the eye something to hold.

It is seriously Minnesotan around here. Much as I would love to get out and shoot some winter, it is just too cold for me. Perhaps later. Right now, I am diving into these waning flowers. So many possibilities! Such good light (…a clear indication it is below freezing in good ‘ole Minne).
